Adult Confirmation at Holy Trinity Sunday, January 25, 2015

What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ. Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to enable you to live in the way of Jesus.

This is not something we check off a list to be a good Anglican. This is an opportunity to say “yes” to following Christ in a public way, and to receive grace from God, by the Holy Spirit, to live that out – to follow Christ and to serve him. In light of this, why wouldn’t all Christians want to be confirmed?

What is required of those to be confirmed?

It is required of those to be confirmed that they have been baptized, are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith (such as the catechism), are repentant of their sins, and are ready to affirm their confession of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
